| The purpose of this research is to study the Chinese Fortune Telling Leaflets in term of its language and culture. Chinese Fortune Telling Leaflets (Yunqian) is one kind of Chinese traditional divination. It appears in form of Chinese ancient poetry and such divination ceremony is usually held in the Buddhist temples or Taoist temples. This makes Chinese Fortune Telling Leaflets not only have the meaning of language and culture, religious significance, but also contain unique artistic features, language culture and the arts applied to instances of religious activities. In recent years, numbers of researchers pay great attention to the Fortune Telling Leaflets but the studies mainly discuss religions, folklore, literature and arts, focusing on poetry and overlook the linguistic terms and culture terms.Based on Chinese Fortune Telling Leaflets from five temples in Thailand and significant information received from the interview, the researcher carries out a linguistic research. The researcher firstly introduces research’s background in which includes the purpose of the research and associated linguistic theories, as well as a review of previous researches in China and Thailand. Then, the definitions of Fortune Telling Leaflets, the revolution of China’s Fortune Telling Leaflets, the revolution of Chinese Fortune Leaflets in Thailand are discussed. Furthermore, the researcher elaborately introduces general structure of Thailand’s Chinese Fortune Telling Leaflets.This research, from linguistics angle, particularly analyzes Fortune Telling Leaflets’s phonology:syllables, rhymes, and tones, semantic:symbolic words, rhetoric, sentence structures and cognition process. These use the linguistic terms to connect people and Chinese Fortune Telling Leaflets. In addition, this study finds out Chinese Fortune Telling Leaflets is rich of cultural content such as religious teachings, folklore customs etc., that is the result of cognitive linguistic. |
