On The Fansubbing In China From The Perspective Of Bakhtin’s Carnival Theory

Film and television translation studies, an important branch in the field of translation studies, have not been taken seriously by the translation circle. Along with the urgent demand of the domestic fans for the foreign film and television productions, especially the demand for the American television series, the network organizations of fansubs have come into existence. Fansubbing is a new form of film and television translation, and is full of vitality and creativity. It has injected energy into the traditional film and television translation. The folk translation of fansubbing has great impact on the official translation. In the meantime, the fansubs keep learning the strong points of official translation to improve their translation level.Bakhtin is an extraordinary talent and his thoughts have produced a huge impact on the ideological and cultural field of the20th century. The theoretical system of Bakhtin is very complicated and it is extremely hard to conduct research covering all aspects of his thoughts. Therefore, an intensive and systematic research on a certain aspect of his theory is of practical significance. In recent years, the research hotspot has concentrated on his Carnival Theory, with the connotation of "freedom, equality, unabashed individuality and unfettered laughter".The thesis starts with the research of the fansubs in the film and television translation research, summarizes five features of fansubbing in combination with the translation of fansubs to the foreign film and television plays, especially those whose language is English with the help of Bakhtin’s Carnival Theory, including free-minded online revelry, revelry among fanubbers, interactive revelry between viewers and fansubbers, fashion-forward individuality revelry, and parodia and mixed language revelry, points out the quality problems, copyright infringement problems, funding and management problems arising in the process of fansubbing, analyzes the causes to these problems, such as the poor management of the fansubs and the lack of responsibility sense of some fansubbers, and proposes that sound management systems of the fansubs should be built and the responsibility sense of all fansubs should be aroused.The revelried translation of fansubbing has certain impact on the official translation. The revelried fansubbing and official translation infiltrate each other and learn from each other to improve their own translation qualities. In the end, the author indicates the limitations of the thesis, especially the broadness of the research object and provides feasible suggestions for further research on fansubbing.This thesis has the following significances. First, it has certain effect of provoking people’s concern for fansubbing in film and television translation. Second, it breaks a different path for the research of film and television translation. Third, it predicts the outlook for fansubbing and is of certain practical significance in maintaining the existence of fansubs and promoting the fansubs’better development.
