Metrical Study On The Modifying Compound Words In Water Margin

As a kind of compound word with strong ability of word-formation, modifyingcompound words appeared as early as the Western Zhou period, which model is far moreproductive than the other. The linguistic field has never stopped the research adout themodifying compound words. Most of the researchers focus on the grammatical structureand the relation of the morpheme’s significance. Although the study is relatively abundant,the scholars give more attention to the contemporary Chinese and the ancient Chinese thanthe modern Chinese. This article will analyze the modifying compound words in WaterMargin in several aspects, including the grammatical structure, the morpheme’s semanticrelationships and the relations between the meaning of a word and the morphemes. Withthe analysis we can discuss the characters and the law of them based on which to attemptto provide a basis and offer help for the vocabulary study of the modern Chinese.The article mainly includes six parts:The first part is an introduction which introduces the research status, the significanceof this topic, the selection of materials, the mentalities and the methods of the modifyingcompound words in Water Margin, so as to confirm the criteria.The second part does the measurement analysis to the grammar structure types, mainlyincluding the internal structure of nominal compound words, the verbal compound words,adjective compound words, adverbial compound words and so on.The third part discusses the semantic relations between the modified morpheme andthe center morpheme.The fourth part discusses the relations between the meaning of the modifyingcompound word and the morphemes as well as the issue about the center of the meaning.The last part is a conclusion which summarizes the constitutional characteristic of themodifying compound words in Water Margin, based on which we can discusses the wordswith their meanings included in the Dictionary of Water Margin and the Grand ChineseDictionary.
