Soul Dilemma And Order Demand

Space construction is one of the obvious feature in Virginia Woolf’s a series of the stream of consciousness novels, I divide the space forms into two types, that are "empty house" space and focusing space after arranging and concluding. The thesis, established in texts, space research as the main research method, looks into the meaning and the writer’s deeply thinking which included in the two types of space forms combining some views of Existentialism and Feminist. This thesis is dived into four chapters. The first two chapters mainly discuss the shape features and meanings of the two kinds of space based on the texts. The third chapter analyses the relation of the space construction and Woolf’s consideration to the rebuilding of life order. The fourth chapter probes into the aesthetic nature of Woolf’s space construction. Through a close reading of the texts, I consider that Woolf once tried to rebuild life order of the figures in her works when facing the changes of the times and the losing of social order. However, everybody cannot stop the tragedy of the times.In her last novel Between the Acts, the "Empty house" that symbolizes nothingness reappeares which declares the failure of Woolf’s exploration and effort. Besides, the series of Woolf’s space construction has a close connection to her living environment that means London and the poetic nature together stimulate the writer’s inspiration. Woolf always keeps an eye on human’s life as well as the dispelling to extreme emotion that shows her absorption of aestheticism and beyond it. Compare to writers of the same period, Woolf’s space construction possesses themselves’unique, that has a faithful to life’s general circumstances which makes Woolf’s works have an warmth of life care. As a exquisite and sensitive female stream of consciousness novelist, Woolf’s space creation is closely related to human being and life circumstances that make her space construction owns independent literary value.
