Thai Language Taboos

Language taboo is a world-wide language phenomenon. Due to the influencesof religion and imperial power, Thailand has abundant language taboos.Through the analysis of the collected language materials,this dissertationdivides the language taboo into six types, which are: topic-related language taboo,religious language taboo, imperial language taboo, physiological language taboo,gender-related language taboo and expletives language taboo. And based on this,three main characteristics of language taboo are concluded in Thai: unity ofsociality and classes, unity of systematicness and derivation, and unity of nationaltraditions and modern homoplasy.According to the constructional style of these language taboos, five typicallygenerative models of language taboo are concluded: model of fuzzy substitution,model of image analogy, model of semantic sublimation, the falling tone statementand model of loanwords substitution. A preliminary study is given to theinfluencing factors in the course of the form and development of the languagetaboo in Thai, including religion and politics, historical psychology, and physicalgeography etc. Moreover, comparisons are made between the language taboos ofThai and Chinese, Thai and English, in which the similarities and differences aremade. In the last, this dissertation apply the language study into reality, exploringthe applications of language taboo of Thai in Chinese as a foreign language andcross-cultural application.The main purpose of this dissertation is through the taboo language of Thailandto enhance the awareness of Thai language taboos knowledge and understanding,cause people pay more attention to the important role of the Thai language taboosin Chinese as a foreign language and cross-cultural application, promote China andThailand exchange and communicate more deeper in the cultural filed.
