Language is an essential tool for human beings to study social life anda second language. In learning a second language, it is necessary toacquire profound understanding and sentiment of the language that one islearning and the mother tongue as well as having a sincere learningattitude.There are some frequent and unavoidable errors that Korean studentsexperience in learning Chinese language and the reasons for these errorsare very diverse. One of them is known as “negative transfer” of themother tongue. Transfer phenomena have great influence on the overallprocess of learning a second language. If a student is in a certainlanguage environment (language environment of the mother tongue orintermediary language) and it helps to learn another language (targetlanguage environment), it is a “positive transfer”. On the other hand,if opposite results do emerge, it would be “negative transfer”, thetheme of this thesis.Vocabulary is one of the diverse elements of language. This studyinvestigates the influence of Korean students’ language habits whenlearning Chinese mainly in relation to vocabularies. In addition, itdescribes solutions when learners and teachers face such phenomena inlearning Chinese.
