The negation is one of the most common phenomena in the field of linguistics, and is a quite complicated phenomenon as well; therefore linguists have carried out extensive and intensive researches on the negation. So far, the study of negative form, negative meaning, negative sentences and its translation have contributed to the further and better understanding of it. However, the application of negation in legal documents is worthy of arresting the attention of scholars. Thus based on the corpus, combined with the register theory of Halliday, the study of negation and its E/C translation in maritime business contracts is accomplished. A brand new angle, namely the frequency of negation and its E/C translation, is vital for the application of negation as well as its translation methods.Through the software MonoConc Pro 2.2, the frequencies of negative affixation and negative words in maritime business contracts have been discussed, and the formal negative words, the legal negative words have been analyzed; meanwhile it is found that the literal translation is the frequent translation techniques. The results show that the frequency of negative prefix is much higher than negative suffix; the quasi negation is hardly visible; negative preposition phrases and negative adjective phrases enjoy high frequency; the frequency of negative verbal phrases is zero; absolute negative sentences are widely applied; the frequency of double negative sentences is relatively low. From the perspective of the field, technical negative expressions and the juxtaposition of negative synonyms have been employed extensively. From the perspective of the tenor, hosts of formal negative words have been discovered in maritime business contracts. From the perspective of the mode, the cohesion of negations at the lexical level and the nominalization with negative meanings are noticeable as well.
