John M. Synge’s drama Riders to the Sea is the masterpiece of asymbolism tragedy. It Is not only a wonderful works of symbolismplays, but also a treasure of Irish literature. With regard to thestudy of the Irish playwright in our country is also exiguous. Peoplepay attention to his works again, since the works has taken to thestage of China in the 21stcentury. Thesis start from the perspectiveof symbolism for his one-act play——Riders to the Sea. From datingback to the origin , the text interpretation and impact of the threeaspects interpret the text, trying to interpret the position andsignificance of Synge in the symbolism plays, through the textexploration.The thesis is divided into three parts of the introduction, bodyand conclusion. A total of four chapters is to illustrate theinheritance, innovation and impact of Riders to the Sea. TheIntroduction is mainly about the domestics Synge’s works’translation, stage performance, as well as the research andsignificance of the topic by authors. The text is divided into two parts: the first part is mainly about the inheritance and innovationfrom symbolism plays in Riders to the Sea, including the symbol oforigin and symbolic representation. The second part mainlydescribes a symbol of independent characteristics of the works,and symbol - the realism of the perfect combination of far-reachingimpact and importance on the symbolism plays. It has become atouch of heavy color in Irish literary history. The conclusionrestates the significance and characteristics of Synge’s symbolismskills on dramas and offers some useful materials to the futuregenerations.
