After new China was founded, Sheng art has achieved great development: its playing skills and music creation have been greatly improved; Sheng also plays a more and more important role in the band’s configuration; Many Musical Instruments, innovators, players and composers made great contributions to the rapid development of Sheng.Mr. Mu Shanping has made important contributions to the expression of Sheng, the enrichment of tracks and the enhancement of the social status of Sheng. He developed a new form of Sheng with thirty-seven reeds. With retaining of the tradition, this form expands the range of Sheng. It opened up a great space for the learning and teaching of Sheng. He created a‘tongue fluttering’technique and the unique‘three-atmosphere’playing style, which enriched the playing techniques of Sheng. In Sheng songs creation, there are many classics provided for teaching and learning, which are spreaded widely, such as‘Gua Hong Deng’,’Wi Shan Hu Chuan Ge’and so on.There are four chapters in this paper to introduce Mr Mu’s Sheng performance art. Chapter I briefly described the learning and teaching experience of Mr Mu. Chapter II elaborated Mr Hu’s innovation and reform for Sheng from the point of‘tongue fluttering’and‘three-atmosphere’playing techniques. Chapter III introduced the new form of Sheng with thirty-seven reeds. Chapter IV is the point of this paper, it discussed the playing art of Mr Mu from several tracks of him.By probing into the Mu Shan Ping’s Sheng works, this article makes us appreciate the remarkable achievements of Mr. Mu in the playing skills, instrumental reforms and the unique idea of musical creation, and know his prominent contributions to the development and innovation of Sheng art. His achievements provide the solid foundation for our future study.
