Subjunctivities Peculiar To The Self-translator

Self-translation is a special translation phenomenon in literature translation. With the further study of translation, some scholars began to study self-translation and make a comparison between self and conventional translation copies of the same literature work. We can analyze translation from another angle by the comparison between self and conventional translation copies, which is different from the comparison among conventional translation copies, so that we could have an in-depth view of translation. Scholars in our country have made commendable attempts in self translation, but few studies on comparison between self and conventional translation of one work (only3postgraduate essays, proved from aesthetic acceptance and Lefevere’s rewriting theory), even least from the theory of translator’s subjunctivity. After the cultural turn in translation studies, translator’s subjunctivity has been studied by many shcolars from various aspects. It mutually functions on self and conventional translation from translator’s subjunctive view, not only to provide new views to compare self and other translation, further understand self-translation, but also provide references for the research of translator’s subjectivity.The Mountain Village was written in English by Chun-chan Yeh in1940s. It influenced all over the world after its publication. It has been translated into many languages and is still reprinting now. There’s no study on Chun-chan Yeh’s work and his translation. Some parts in Chun-chan Yeh’s self-translation copy and He Jin’s translation copy of The Mountain Village were chosen in this thesis. They will be made a comparison combined by other factors to point out self-translator’s aims, differences and causes between self and conventional translation copies. New points in this thesis:comparing self and conventional translation copies from the theory of translator’s subjunctivity and pointing out the self translator’s subjunctive consciousness in translation of the same work.The significance for this study:first, widening field of self-translation studies and making a study on multi-language author Chun-chan Yeh; second, providing new views for self and conventional translation of the same work. The present paper is to point out translator’s subjunctive consciousness by comparing with self and conventional translation from the theory of translator’s subjunctivity; third, conducting a research on the motives of self-translator. This paper will compare with two kinds of translation, meanwhile employing other out-text factors, to find out self-translation causes; fourth, providing proof for future self-translation studies and comparison between self and conventional translation.
