In Ming and Qing dynasties, the clan in Fujian, Southeast of China, got a critical de velopment with respect to the clan organization and patriarch system. For example, an ad opted child was chosen to be the heir in a clan that greatly valued blood lineage. The "bol lworm child" custom prevailed in the local, which resulted from the reproduce concern a nd was greatly affected by the utility value of the extroversion commodity economy. At t he same time, the responses of the country and society to the custom changed with the de velopment of society and were recorded in documents such as pedigrees and local chroni cles. With the help of pedigrees and local chronicles, the paper analyzes and explores the "bollworm child" phenomenon from the following angels:the prevailing degree of the phenomenon, causes of the phenomenon, its effects to the social structure and responses of different classes to the phenomenon. Based on the analysis, the paper further reveals the weakening of blood lineage and the increasing of utility factor, exposes the situation that the strict clan system and patriarch relationship weakened due to the utility value, and reflects that inburgering and utility trends occur in the society with the development of commodity economy.
