A Study Of Patriarchal Welfare In The Ming And Qing Dynasties

Clan welfare provides money,goods and service to its numbers basedon relationship by bloods,which is composed of endowmentwelfare,education welfare,giving aid to the poor，etc.Based on clan’s welfare system of Song Dynasty, During Ming and Qing Dynasty,clanwelfare had developed a lot.This paper frist analyzes the conditions that formed the clanwelfare,namely the economy,politics,culture and organizationconditions,pointing out that although clan’s effect was failing as abasic economy organization,but it became more and more autonomous andgeneral,which laid a solid foundation for clan welfare.Then we analyzethe formation and context of clan endowment welfare,clan educationwelfare,giving aid to the poor numbers,clan medical welfare,wedding andfuneral welfare and disaster relief welfare.At last,we summarize thefeatures and limits of clan welfare,and analyze its value in modernsociety.We suggest that emphasize the traditional ethics when set awelfare policy.And it is much better that the welfare policy should beclose to people’s daily life and explore the mixed path of welfarepolicy.The conclusion is Ming&Qing’s economy,politics,culture andorganization conditions laid solid foundation for clan welfare. Clanendowment welfare,clan education welfare,giving aid to the poornumbers,clan medical welfare,wedding and funeral welfare and disasterrelief welfare did exist,and these have a relatively important influenceas a complement for government welfare.If we can get rid of itsdisadvantages and promote its advantages,clan welfare may enlightentoday’s society.
