On The Use Of Classifiers In Zhou Zuoren’s Translations And Original Writings

The paper discusses the use of classifiers in Zhou Zuoren’s original writings and translations.By comparing the different use of classifiers in Zhou Zuoren’s translations and his writings, theauthor manages to observe the differences between translations and original writings and therelationship between the two languages.In order to investigate the difference in the use of classifiers between Zhou Zuoren’translations and his writings, first the author first collects the translations and his writings,meanwhile the author establishes translational corpus and original writings’ corpus respectively.Then the author selects all the classifiers in Zhou Zuoren’s translations and original writings toclassify all classifiers and makes the statistics of classifiers. Second, by means of the above data,the author makes the quantitative analysis on the classifiers’ functions and characteristics andalso analysize them from grammatical and pragmatic persepectives. And the author also makes acomparative study of Zhou Zuoren’ translations and his writings so as to analyze and summarizethe characteristics of classifier in Zhou Zuoren’ translations and his writings. At last, the authormakes a conclusion about the research.The author compares and analysizes the use of classifiers in Zhou Zuoren’ translations andhis writings. The results are listed as follows.First, when it comes to the types of classifier in the two corpora, the total type of classifiersin Zhou Zuoren’s writings is much more than that of classifiers in his translations. This canillustrates that the richness of classifier in his original writings.Second, as for verbal classifiers and compound classifier, verbal classifier is flexibly used inZhou Zuoren’s original writings, for example,“zhen”.and “xia” can collocate with “zi”, whichmakes us feel relaxed. There are a few compound classifiers in both Zhou Zuoren’s translationsand his writings. There exists only four words, that is “pian fu”(篇幅),“hang lie”(行列),“suiyue”(岁月) and “shi dai”(时代).Third, as for the nominal classifiers, Zhou Zuoren attaches great importance to theemotional meaning of nominal classifier, such as the distribution of “ge”,“wei”, and “ming”.There is little difference of distribution of the three words in Zhou Zuoren’s writings.“Ge”appears most frequently in Zhou Zuoren’s translations. The frequency of “ge” reaches to151;however the other two words appear relatively lower in his translations.Fourth, the author discusses the generalization of “ge”. Comparing Zhou Zuoren’stranslations and his writings, the author finds that the numeral before “ge” is not often omitted inhis translations; however “ge” is often omitted in his original writings. The author is influencedby the translations, so some strange uses of “ge” appear in Zhou Zuoren’s translations. On the whole, the paper describes the usages of classifiers from different perspectives andmakes the comparative study of classifiers in Zhou Zuoren’s translations and his writings. Theauthor finds that to a certain degree, the usages of classifiers are different in the two languages.The translation of foreigin literature riches the Chinese classifiers, such as the classifiers ofmeasurement “Krone”,“ge bei ke”,“ting”.
