After a long period of development, the ancient Chinese joke reached its peak in the Ming Dynasty. This is not only reflected in the large number of joke creations, but also from the depth and scope of its reflection of social problems. These joke texts spread so far, first, as literary works, can not be equated to the historical truth, but, at the same time, they are not the pure literary creations which are independent of the historical truth. In the view of this, how to examine and interpret history through these words is becoming a meaningful learning.This dissertation, centered on joke texts in the Period of Ming Dynasty, especially based on Feng Menglong’s San Xiao, is only a preliminary investigation and tries to deal with the following questions:First, to analysis the background of prosperity of joke texts in the Ming Dynasty. Many factors make joke, a popular form of literature, to be prosperous, such as the development of commodity economy, the growth of the public sectors, the activity of publishing industry, the distinctive cultural environment of Ming Dynasty and so on. This is an important premise for the overall grasp of the Ming Dynasty joke.Second, joke is restricted by its manifestations, so, in most cases, it expresses the views by shaping typical image. The second part of the dissertation mainly studies three groups in the San Xiao, they are Officials, Scholars, women with jealous psychology and famous prostitutes, because they are of great significance for us to understand history.Third, the correspond with the above three groups are official atmosphere, aristocratic ethos, fashion of secularization. Therefore, the third part of the dissertation, mainly through the perspective of the text to explore the social picture of reality in the Ming Dynasty.Forth, in the study of the joke texts, the group of the creators can not be ignored. Why should they crate this kind of image rather than that, and why are they concerned about these events rather than others, the ridicule and criticism in their words, in the final analysis, are the performance of their deep anxiety about the alienation politics, the imperial examination system, the social atmosphere.Overall, as an academic research of one aspect of the Ming Dynasty historical research, this dissertation, in the process of joke texts study, insists on the principle of objective analysis and theory from historical materials, and tries to depict a basic real historical features.
