This translation report gives analysis and summary to the translation process of chapterfive of Advice to Young Men.Advice to Young Men was written by William Cobbett, a British essayist, journalist andpolitical activist, in1829. In chapter five of this book, the writer gives genuine advices toyoung men of his time on the subjects as love and marriage and elaborates the youth’sresponsibilities and obligations for their nation and their country. The content also includessome advice to young women. This translation task is part of the “Bilingual Project†ofForeign Language Teaching and Research Press, the translation of the whole is completed bythe author and the other six classmates. So the translation text should meet requirement of“Bilingual Project†as well as faithfully transmit the original text’s meaning, at the same time,attention should also be paid on the unifying of technical terms.The translator mainly adopts Yan Fu’s translation principle of “Faithfulness, Smoothnessand Eleganceâ€, combing with other translation skills in the translation process. This papermainly analyzes the problems met in the process, the solution, the translation theory and skillused in the process on the basis of the test, and gives specific examples to present thetranslation process.In the last part of the paper, the translator realizes the complexity of translation andunderstands a qualified translator must possess the ability to master language as well asculture,besides, ample and systematic translation theories are also necessary. |
