He Zhiyi（1906—1974）was one of the most influential painters and art educators of the20th century,who owned an important place in the history of modern painting. He graduated from National institute ofart of university of Beijing Chinese painting department and had extremely high modeling ability and thetraditional painting literacy, depending on which he was unique on the way of active exploration andinnovation. He was good at Flower and Bird Painting in Liberal Style and landscape. Flowers in his styleall have particularly lively and vivid spirit.When He Zhiyi was young, his family was poor, but he studied very hard and once studied under theguide of Qi Baishi, Wang Mengbai, Chen Banding. During his lifetime, He Zhiyi held lofty fame, but he worked in Kaifeng for a long time, after hisdeath he didn’t get as much attention as the same period artists, like Zhao Wangyun, Jiang Handing, TangYun, Zhang Dazhuang, Lu Yifei, Kang Shiyao,Su Baozhen, Zhang Zhenduo, Zhu Qizhan,Yu Xining, SunQifeng,etc. That is the reason why the author chooses this thesis. In viewof the chaos of He Zhiyi’s born year, this thesis bases on the examination of He’s born year, centers onHe’s painting artistic conception and personality researching. From the official file form, autobiography,such as biographies of precious historical paintings and seals, combined with interview and literature material, this paper discusses the lifetime, art, art characteristics and time limitation, analyses and finds itsunique charm and people’s personality.Through the methods of literature review, image analysis, style comparison, the author discusses HeZhiyi’s painting characters, compares He’s painting characters with the Style characteristics, theme, artproposition, aesthetic pursuit of flowers and birds painting of the same period painters, He’s works haveSuperb techniques, deep connotation and maverick aesthetic value. The kernel chapters conduct research onHe’s language of his paintings from painting subjects, composition layout, ink techniques and four aspectsof forms.
