After China’s opening up to the outside world in1978, many western countries have been enthusiastic about China. Many scholars hold that China is the world’s largest emerging market which has more than one billion consumers and whose rank in the world trade has rose from32nd in1978to the second in recent years. And in2011, China’s GDP ranks the world’s second place following USA, which makes China the largest recipient of foreign direct investment among developing countries. With the long history of more than5thousand years, China is marked as a difficult and risky market.Press conference is not only a window for foreign countries to get to know China’s strategies but also a way to enjoy and appreciate China’s ancient culture, especially Chinese poetry. Premier Wen is a lover of Chinese poetry, who likes to use poetry to express his comments on politics at press conferences. Translating poetry is quite difficult, but translating poetry at press conferences is much tougher. Translation at press conferences is real-time, and interpreters do not have enough time to ensure their translation to reach the art of perfection. This thesis analyzes translating skills of poems by quoting Premier Wen at press conferences mainly from3parts. On the basis of Paris School’s Interpretive Theory and Daniel Gile’s model of interpretation, the first part introduces the difficulties of poetry translation at press conferences from the perspectives of cultural differences and difficulties of on-site interpretation at press conferences; then the second part states elements affecting the interpretation reproduction, in including the interpreter, the audience and flexibility; the last part illustrates the translating skills of poems by quoting Premier Wen at press conferences: simplification, generalization, omission, explanation and good preparation before press conferences. This thesis aims at providing some references for interpreters and amateurs and ensuring that they can get to know the skills of poetry translation at press conferences.
