Xue’s story is a well-known story in Chinese traditional culture,which was adapted for the stage later. In order to clarify the overallappearance of Xue’s story, this thesis draws on previous researchresults and shows up case study and comparative study, based on thesumming up of Xue’s play data systematically especially existing datain Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.This thesis is divided into four parts. The first part focuses onhistorical facts of Xue’s, describing the real condition on the basis ofrelated data. The title Xue’s is proved to be real which is recorded inhistory and enjoy popular confidence from the origin of Xue’s to theachievement of Xue Rengui and his descendants. In the second part,the author depicts the relevant“Xue”opera in the Yuan dynasty usingthe method of analysis and comparison. The script of "Xue Rengui’sconquering to Liao" is the earliest literary work of Xue Rengui, whichprovide the blueprint of relevant works of Xue Rengui. We can see theevolution of Xue Rengui’s story by comparing historical facts with“Xue Rengui’s conquering to Liao”. By contrast, the connection and differences in the characters, plot, using words and theme tendencyof the same repertoire between the two versions of "Xue Rengui’shomecoming successfully" in Yuan and Ming dynasties are showedclearly. At the same time, the focus on female appears in the Yuandynasty. In the third part, two legends of Xue’s are analyzed andappreciated. From the respective of character changing, plot settingand artistic characteristics, the author wants to discuss theinheritance and development of Xue’s in Ming dynasty and analyzesthe reason of evolution. In the fourth part, the source and repertoireof Xue’s play are analyzed from the respective of local opera sinceQing dynasty. The spreading condition of Xue’s in local opera and theconcept of loyalty, utilitarianism and feminism implied in Xue’s playthroughout analysis of the opera“the Fenhe Bay”, the Puzhou opera”Back to the country”and the Jiju opera“inviting Fan Lihua for threetimes”. In the part of conclusion, Xue’s play is the most important partof Chinese traditional culture, which is refraction of the folk customs.It gains popularity of people and worth to study.
