| To date, discourse markers have become a topic of research in discourse analysis andpragmatic studies, and the study of discourse markers has resulted in fruitful researchachievements. Comparatively speaking, the study of Chinese discourse markers has laggedbehind, mainly focusing on the pragmatic functions of discourse markers, with lessattention on their translation into the target language. Out of this consideration, the studyemploys empirical research method and deductive method to research the translation ofChinese discourse markers from the perspective of relevance theory. In this case study,Chinese discourse markers are divided into three groups, including modal particles, linkingwords and parentheses, which are further classified into sub-groups. The dominanttranslation principle is that the pragmatic meanings they assume should be properlytransmitted into the target language so as to help the readers better understand the originalauthor’s intentions. This research is conductive to a further systematic study of thepragmatic functions of discourse markers, thus improving translation practice andoutcome. |
