Buddhist appeared in the Tang Dynasty, which is written by a well-known monk XuanZang according to his experience in nineteen years during his way to the ancient India oflearning the Buddhist sutras, and recorded into a book by his follower Bianji. Even after morethan one thousand and three hundred years, this book still occupies a very important positionin the geography, history, religion, literature, especially in the history of transportation. Thebook is not only the introduction of one hundred and thirty-eight countries, regions, and citiesthat Xuan Zang passed on his way or heard about, but also contains a variety of vividBuddhist stories and legends,which also reflects the profound knowledge and extraordinarylanguage talent of Xuan Zang. The book is rich in verbs, truly reflects the prosperity of thelinguistic features in early Tang dynasty. This paper takes the verbs in the book as the objectof study, tries to make a comprehensive analysis and statistics, meanwhile makes an staticdescription and analysis objectively.The first chapter is an introduction, which briefly introduces the book Buddhist, mainlyabout its situation, version, and the author; and it also gives a description of value and thepresent research situation of study on verbs of this book. This chapter also gives anexplanation of the study method of specialized books and the theory and method of studyused in this paper.The second chapter is about the verb profiles, including the criteria of verbs, quantitystatistics, standard of classification etc..Chapter three is the main part. According to the principle of combining semantics andgrammars, the verbs in "Buddhist" could be exhaustively divided into seven categories: actionverbs, state verbs, directional verbs, modal verbs, verbs of existence, perception verbs, andratio verbs. And this chapter analyses the grammar function of each category.Chapter four learns from the theories and research findings of rhetoric, and analyses theverbs from the stylistic point. As a result, this chapter summarizes and proves the existence oftwo kinds of style of writing, and analyses and discusses on the formation of two differentstyles.
