The Study On The Range Adverbs In MengZi

Since the book Ma Shi Wen Tong written by Ma Jianzhong was published in1889,adverb has been a matter of debate all the time and there is still much disagreementabout such problems as whether adverbs belong to the notional or the functional,subcategories of adverbs and the syntactic functions of individual adverb. Rangeadverb, as a minor subcategory, is directly influenced by the above problems. Noconsensus has been reached on the attribute of range adverb, its subcategories and itssyntactic functions.The present thesis, with the range adverbs in The Works of Mencius as the object,studies the definition, categorization, semantic orientation, modified object andparallel usage of range adverbs in The Works of Mencius from perspectives ofgrammar, semantics and pragmatics. This thesis is an effort to obtain an overallunderstanding of range adverb and further provide references and basis for follow-upstudies on range adverb.
