Study On Conducting Style And Artistic Functions Of Chinese Traditional Bands

The scope of this thesis is a variety of methods and styles which having the function of musicalconducting in Chinese traditional band. Though Chinese traditional band and modern professionalorchestra ((including Western orchestra and national orchestra)) belong two different system of music,and there have no full-time conductor. But there have an effective method and unique way on how tocoordinated play of band which have many players, and the method may play the similar role on artfunction with the conductor of modern professional orchestra. So, we can see them as the “art ofconducting” which have no real full-time conductor. So this thesis is focus on the variety of methodsand ways of the “art of conducting”.Although there have different methods and ways between western conductor and the function ofthis conducting, there must be the subject of “art of conducting”. Because this thesis is focused on theconducting methods of traditional Chinese band which played the role by the expression of “artfunctions” in musical performances, music shows and music transmission, the acquisition of theresearch must have a lot of academic value on further understanding of "conductor" of this position inthe band and explore how the so called "the way of conducting" affect to the band.There have six part of the thesis:(1) Introduction: explain the reason of choosing topics, researchareas, research methods, the present research articles and the sources of research.(2)The first section"signal objects on conductor": from the conductor of the ancient Chinese military array and danceteem, to discussing the "hui","Duo","tao" and some other signal objects which conducting theancient band.(3) The second Section "the sound of musical instruments controlling the band": todiscuss the how the "zhu" and "Yu" guiding the ancient band and how the "beat","board" and theother musical instruments played the conductor’s role.(4)The third Section "playing a musicalinstrument to guiding the band": from the main instrument of the traditional band, to discussing thevarious kinds of main instruments in folk music ensemble band to conducting the band.(5) The forthsection "drum rhythm to guiding the band": from the function of traditional Chinese drum in the bandto analyzing the various methods in the Instrumental Ensemble of drums and drum master in the operaorchestra.(6)Conclusion: To summarize variety methods of conducting. And Discussing the artfunctions of the band from the examples of the ways of the Chinese traditional band’s conducting. Atthe same time, I proposed the traditional experience of “conductor” and how to further understandingof "conductor","conducting in a band" and the "method of conducting","Art of conducting" andother concepts which worthing to considering some of the theoretical thinking.
