From the constructing of the first street in Ming Dynasty, to the thousands ofstreets of today, the development of Macao has gone through a long history of400to500years. Yet specific to the many problems of street abolition and modification inthis city, at present there isn’t any systemetic and impeccable monographic study.Based on full and accurate historical data, taking the city regional expansion andstreet construction process of Macao between the year1912and1999as researchobject, this thesis divides the street construction of this city in that period into twomain areas: the old town area and the reclamation area, according to the geographicfeature and historical track of the city. Research on the construction of the old townarea takes the new roads as example of case, focusing on the variation of the newroads and the surrounding streets. As for the reclamation area, research on it can bedivide into for parts: the southwestern, the southern, the northwestern, and the easternpart of the city. And of the four parts of this area, the southwestern part includes twotypes of areas: Portuguese and Chinese; the southern part contains the southern bayarea and the western bay area; the northwestern part covers Qingzhou Area, TaishanArea, and Kuaiziji Area; and the eastern part consists of five areas: Stud-Farm, Heisha,Tanggou, New Port, and New Port Reclamation Area. A thorough analysis and studyof the historical modification, specific position, name causation, and the relativehistorical and geographic background of the streets in the old town area and thereclamation area of Macao is the basis for studying this city, and it is a great referenceand has a practical value for the construction and future development of MacaoPeninsula.
