As the key to the development of the Chinese language education in thePhilippines, the issue of qualified teachers is also regarded as the major part in thepresent reform of the Chinese language education in the Philippines. This paperfocuses on the quality of the Chinese language teachers in Cebu in the Philippines.For an objective and comprehensive understanding of the quality of teachers, theauthor of this paper, as volunteer for the Chinese language education for10months inCebu in the Philippines, paid visits to10Chinese schools, leaders of the ChineseDepartments of these schools, a retired principal and conducted questionnaireinvestigation into all local volunteer teachers. Based on the results of thequestionnaire, visits, everyday observation upon the local teachers, this paper consistsof four parts: personal situation of the teachers, overall cognition of the Chineselanguage teaching by the teachers, teaching practices by the teachers, training andparticipation for the local teachers, the paper gives an introduction to the presentcondition of quality of teachers in the Chinese schools, digs into some of the problemsin the teachers group and the causes, and puts forward the suggestions for theconstruction of qualified teachers in terms of the long run improvement.
