On Translator’s Subjectivity In Literary Translation From The Perspective Of Steiner’s Hermeneutic Translation Theory

Based on the fourfold hermeneutic translation motion theory proposed by George Steiner, the paper endeavors to research the translator’s subjectivity embodied in Lin and Cheng’s version of Rebecca from four concrete steps of "trust", "aggression", "appropriation" and "compensation". The thesis aims at achieving concrete cognition on how the translator’s subjectivity influences the translated version, expecting to prove that the translators displayed their subjectivity to the utmost extent in four specific translation steps.The thesis mainly applies the theory of hermeneutics to prove the translator’s subjectivity manifested in Chinese version of Rebecca. The fourfold translation motion includes the translator’s trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation. In the first step, the translator who is required to fully grasp the source text believes the text is meaningful and has something valuable. After the trust comes the translator’s aggression, which is the incursive move of the translator. In the third step, the translator brings his interpretation and meanings into the source text. The fourth step, compensation, is absolutely essential to restore the balance in the process of translation.
