With the development of translation theories, the translator’s role and function have become ever more significant and drawn greater attention. A lot of researches have been made on the translator’s subjectivity from different perspectives. This thesis aims to make a study of the translator’s subjectivity from the hermeneutic perspective. Translator is the most important participant in the translation process, who is a decisive factor affecting directly the translation quality. Through analyzing the translator’s subjectivity displayed in the process of translation from the hermeneutic perspective can provide a different view for translation theory and practice.Lin Yutang is a famous writer and translator in China and abroad. His special life experience not only lays a profound culture foundation for him, but helps him to have a good command of English as well as Chinese. Lin Yutang has left us a lot of works. There are many studies on his translations; however, very few studies are made on the translation of Between Tears and Laughter. This thesis dwells on Lin Yutang’s subjectivity displayed in the translation of Between Tears and Laughter from the perspective of George Steiner’s fourfold translation motion theory. Through the concrete analyses of the text, the author gets the conclusion that Lin Yutang brings us a perfect translated version through displaying his subjectivity successfully in the translation of Between Tears and Laughter, thus providing some enlightenment to the translation study and translation practice. Besides, the author also analyzes the factors which will influence and limit the translator’s subjectivity when George Steiner’s fourfold translation motion theory is considered, and then proposes some suggestions for further translation studies.The thesis is divided into five parts:The first part is the introduction of the whole thesis including research background, research questions, research significance, and research method.The second part is literature review. It gives a brief introduction of translator’s subjectivity, existing studies on the translator’s subjectivity from the perspective of George Steiner’s fourfold translation motion theory, Lin Yutang and the translation of Between Tears and Laughter.The third part provides the theoretical framework of this thesis. It introduces the contents of George Steiner’s fourfold translation motion theory, and then provides the relationship between the translator’s subjectivity and the fourfold translation motion theory. This chapter serves as the support of the study of Lin Yutang’s subjectivity displayed in the translation of Between Tears and Laughter from the perspective of George Steiner’s fourfold translation motion theory.The fourth part presents a detailed study of Lin Yutang’s subjectivity displayed in the translation of Between Tears and Laughter from the perspective of George Steiner’s fourfold translation motion theory.The last part is the conclusion of this thesis. From the above concrete analyses, the author summarizes the major findings and limitations of this thesis, and then proposes some suggestions for further research.
