Objective:To investigate the effect of cerebrolysin on peripheralnerve regeneration.Methods:50female Wistar rats peripheral nerve injury models weremade through clamping sciatic nerve. They were randomly divided intofive groups(n=10):saline group(A), mecobalamin group(B),low dosecerebrolysin group(C),moderate dose cerebrolysin group(D),and highdose cerebrolysin group(E).Experimental drugs were given to each grouponce a day, separately. After10days, the following items as sciatic nervefunction index(SFI),slope experiment and tricipital muscle wet weightwere detected. The sciatic nerve was prepared to be semithin section, stained by toluidine blue and assessed under microscope.Result:In slope experiment, group A had a worse performance thangroup C,D,E(p<0.05,p<0.05,p<0.01, separately). With concentrationincreasing of Cerebrolysin, the slope Angle of group C, D, Eincreases. There were no significant differences between groups except forgroup E and A, the former was better(p<0.05)in the field of tricipitalmuscle wet weight change. The initial SFI has no differences betweeneach group, while the terminal SFI in rats of test group D,E after10daysmore apparently increased as compared with those of rats in groupA(p<0.05,p<0.01,respectively), at the same time that of group E wasbetter than those of group B,C (p<0.05).With concentration increasing ofCerebrolysin, the terminal SFI of group C, D, E closes to0.Assessingunder microscope, the axon and myelin of the regenerative sciatic nerve in rats of the last four groups are much denser and thicker than those insaline group(p<0.01),and with concentration increasing of Cerebrolysin, the data of group C, D, E increase, especially in mean diameter, area andperimeter. Conclusions:Cerebrolysin has the effect of promoting regenerationof injured peripheral nerve. The higher the dose, the better the result.
