OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of subcutaneous implants of peripheral nerve allograft on sciatic nerve regeneration in rats. METHODS: In the present study, 30 male wistar rats were used in this experiment which were carried out randomly in 3 groups. A was control group, B was experimental group, Each group has 12 rats. C was donor group which has 6 rats. A 10 mm sciatic nerve defect was made and was immediately repaired in situ on the left thigh of A. A 15 mm segment of sciatic nerve was harvested from C and was separately inserted into subcutaneous compartment on the right thigh of B. Two weeks later, segment of sciatic nerve in subcutaneous compartment was harvested and was transplanted into a 10 mm sciatic nerve defect of left, which was made immediately. The regeneration of sciatic nerve was histologically examined in 2, 4, 8, 14 weeks ,electrophysiologicaly in examined 14 weeks following the operation. RESULTS: The results of the group A were the same as those of the group B. CONCLUSIONS: The allograft of sciatic nerve inserted into subcutaneous compartment can promote nerve regeneration.
