ObjectiveTo evaluate the aqueous humor and serum levels of chromium (Cr) in cataract patients with and without diabetes mellitus.MethodsLevels of Cr were measured using by atomic absorption spectrometry in the serum from80patients and aqueous humor aspirates taken during anterior segment surgery from40eyes of40patients who had diabetic cataracts and from40eyes of40patients who had senile cataract only.ResultsAll of the experimental specimens were satisfied with the results after a rigorous experiment.1、The correlation analysis between Cr from serum and aqueous humor in diabetes cataract patients and the ages have no significant difference(r=0.009,p>0.05,r=-0.038,p>0.05). The correlation analysis between Cr from serum and aqueous humor in senile cataract patients and the age have no significant difference(r=-0.045,p>0.05, r=0.192, p>0.05). The correlation analysis between Cr from serum and aqueous humor and the duration of diabetes mellitus have no significant difference (r=0.378, p>0.05, r=-0.067,p>0.05)2、Two groups of different age were compared, below the age of75diabetic serum and aqueous chromium content is lower than the non- diabetic group (t=-4.914,p<0.05, t=-4.145, p<0.05), above75years old, serum and aqueous chromium content of diabetic group is lower than the non-diabetic group (t=-4.233,p<0.05, t=-4.679,p<0.05).3、The mean aqueous humor Cr concentration in eyes with diabetes ca-taract was(1.11±0.46)μg/L,lower than that from eyes with senile cata-ract(2.10±0.89)μg/L,and the difference between them was significant (t=-6.206,p<0.05).4、The mean serum Cr concentration in eyes with diabetes cataract was (3.35±0.92)μg/L,lower than that from eyes with senile cataract (4.59±0.82)μg/L,and the difference between them was significant too(t=-6.378,p<0.05).5、The correlation analysis of Cr from serum and aqueous humor in diabetes cataract patients have significant difference(r=0.777,p<0.05). The correlation analysis of Cr from serum and aqueous humor in senile cataract patients have significant difference (r=0.608,p<0.05).Conclusions1、Aqueous humor and serum levels of chromium in cataract patients with diabetes mellitus are lower than that without diabetes mellitus.2、Chromium have a role to the glucose in serum and the anterior chamber of diabetic patients,so we speculate it can control the cataract.3、There is significant correlation between aqueous humor Cr and serum Cr in patients,so we suggest that aqueous humor content of chromium can be evaluated to by serum Cr in certain extent.
