Objective:To study the effects of magnesium intake on insulin resistance in diabetes rats. Methods:The models of type II diabetes rats were established by feeding with high-fat-diet and injecting streptozotocin(STZ).Rats were randomly assigned to four groups. Diabetes control group was feed with high-fat feed only. The dosage added in high-fat feed of the high, medium, low magnesium supplementation groups are2000,1000,200mg/kg (measured by Mg). And normal control group was fed with common diet. All the rats ate and drunk freely. All rats were killed after four weeks. Fasting blood glucose, insulin, total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC), maleic dialdelyde(MDA), pancreatic cells proliferation and magnesium ion concentration were detected.Results:(1) Fasting blood glucose:Compared with model control group, fasting blood glucose was17.45±0.63mmol/l,decreased significantly in high magnesium group (P<0.05). There were no significant difference in medium magnesium group, low magnesium group and model control group (P>0.05).(2) Fasting insulin:Compared with model control group, fasting blood glucose was18.95±0.60mIU/l,decreased significantly in high magnesium group (P<0.05). There were no significant difference in medium magnesium group, low magnesium group and model control group (P>0.05)(3)Insulin resistance index:At the end of the experiment, insulin resistance index in high, medium, low dose group were:14.60±0.53,15.57±0.60,15.56±0.73,diabetic control group was16.41±0.65,the difference between group was statistically significant (P<0.05). High, medium and low dose group showed no significant difference (P>0.05) between each group.(4)T-AOC:Compared with model control group, T-AOC was10.85±0.59U/ml,increased significantly in high magnesium group (P<0.05). There were no significant difference in medium magnesium group, low magnesium group and model control group (P>0.05). (5)SOD:Compared with model control group, SOD was101.92±5.40U/ml,increased significantly in high magnesium group (P<0.05). There were no significant difference in medium magnesium group, low magnesium group and model control group (P>0.05).(6) MDA content:Compared with model control group, MDA content was5.61±0.37nmol/l,decreased significantly in high magnesium group (P<0.05). There were no significant difference in medium magnesium group, low magnesium group and model control group (P>0.05).(7) Cell proliferation In high magnesium group the cell proliferation is0.297±0.031,significantly higher than the diabets mellitus group(P<0.05).(8) TG contents TG contents in hige magnesium group were0.947±0.069mmol/l,was significantly lower than the model control group(P<0.05).Conclusions:Compared with model control group, fasting blood glucose, insulin and MDA decreased, T-AOC and pancreatic cells proliferate activity increased significantly in high magnesium group (P<0.05). Magnesium intake may improve insulin resistance in diabetes rats.
