Nowadays, people’s material life is getting richer, the pace of life is gettingfaster,communication between people, comparison with each other and competition arebecoming increasingly fierce. Then following is the growing number of people’s mentalhealth problems, mental health has become increasingly serious. While the situation ofolder persons with mental illness is more difficult. Mental illness is often accompaniedwith physical illness, and it needs more physical care and psychological comfort.Therefore, in addition to drug treatment, they also need assistant of specialized mentalhealth social workers who use the professional social work to promote the rehabilitationof elderly psychiatric patients.The article first analyzes the social work (referred to as the "social work") tointervene in the development and current status of mental illness, and takes theDepartment of Geriatrics of Wuhan City Mental Health Center for example, and brieflyintroduces the historical development of the Department of Geriatrics, the medical staffand the overview of the elderly with mental illness elderly psychiatric,then describesthe background of the Support group work involved in, intervention methods andintervention process in detail. And does impact assessment at the end of the group work,evaluate the beneficial effects of group activities and inadequacies. Through theintervention of five periods support group work, I found social workers involved in thetreatment of elderly psychiatric patients can better help medical staff to help patients toease and give vent to their feelings, to reduce the psychological pressure, to improve theability to adapt themselves to the surrounding environment, and can deal withinterpersonal relationships well, get some supports from the surrounding environment,and improve the effect of drug treatment. Intervention to elderly psychiatric patientsalso promotes the growth of the social workers, it enables us to master the methods and techniques, and laid a solid foundation for later specialization and professionalism in thesocial work field. This attempt provides a reference for social work intervention in thefield of mental illness, and lays a good foundation for more in-depth research andpractice.
