Objective:There are many cases of alveolar bone inadequacy or bone defect of the jaws. For the reason of closing the physiological dead space, placing implant, or preventing pathological fracture, we always have to repair the defect of the bone. Researches before have shown that Bio-Oss and Coralline Hydroxyapatite(CHA) are good substitutes. The objective is to evaluate the effect of Bio-Oss and CHA by analysis of alveolar bone mineral density(BMD) with the use of panoramic film, and with the evaluation of the clinical effect. Methods:Sixty patients with alveolar bone inadequacy were divided into2groups randomly. Fill the bone defect area of the two groups with Bio-Oss and CHA respectively. Then the patients were followed up at one month, three months and six months after operation. BMD was measured using panoramic film and imagine software, and the healing situation was recorded.Result:The comparison of clinical effect between the two groups shows no statistical significance(p<0.05). The average BMD of the CHA group was98.44±1.09,109.43±2.74,132.85±3.58respectively after one, three and six months after operation; The average BMD of Bio-Oss group was101.31±0.79,112.67±0.87,133.16±0.76respectively at the first, third and sixth months after operation. The BMD difference between Bio-oss and CHA at the first month and third month after operation has statistical significance(p<0.05), while there is no statistical significance between the two groups at sixth month after operation(p<0.05).Conclusions:Bio-Oss and CHA can accelerate the recovery of the alveolar bone defect. The clinical healing effect between them is almost the same, but Bio-Oss shows early advantage in bone formation, while the long-term effect between them is similar. It is simple and convenient way to analyze the BMD of alveolar bone with panoramic film.
