Objective:To understand the status of breast conserving therapy and discuss the risk factors related to recurrence and survival in breast cancer patients. Methods:A total of880breast cancer patients treated with breast conserving therapy in Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital between January1998and October2010were reviewed. The clinical and pathological characteristics were concluded and analyzed by statistical soft ware SPSS13.0to calculated the relation with local control rate, progression-free survival and overall survival. The clinical data were described by the percentage, Kaplan-Meier method for calculation of survival, Log-Rank method for the univariate factor analysis, COX model for multivariate factors analysis, with p<0.05defined as a statistically significant difference.Results:880patients were female, with the median age46years old(range from19to88years old), including589premenopausal patients. After median follow-up46months, we found the five-year local control rate, progression-free survival and overall survival were98.5%,94.4%and98%. Univariate factor analysis results showed that the tumor size, molecular type and postoperative radiotherapy were related with local recurrence (p<0.05). Age, lymph node metastasis number, surgery edge, histological grade, molecular type, postoperative radiation and endocrine therapy were related with progression-free survival (p<0.05). Tumor size, number of lymph node metastasis, surgery edge, molecular type, postoperative radiation and endocrine therapy were related with overall survival (p<0.05). Multivariate factors analysis result confirmed that the postoperative radiation was the common independent factors with these three survival variables. Conclusions:Whether local control or long-term survival is higher in early breast cancer treated with breast conserving surgery. Postoperative radiotherapy is the main factors related with reductive local recurrence and improved prognosis.
