Objective: To study the chemical components of the Roots of Foeniculum vulgareMill. Through the extraction and separation got petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, N-butanoland water extracts. To study protective effect and involved possible mechanisms of theRoots of Foeniculum vulgare Mill. against carbon tetrachloride(CCl4), D-Galactosaminehydrochloride(D-GalN) and Bacillus Calmette Guerin(BCG) plus lipopolysaccharides(LPS) induced acute liver injuries in mice and CCl4-induced liver fibrosis in rats. Comparevarious extract on the protection of the damage the liver function of liver damage anddetermine the effective parts. Methods: The animal models of liver injury wereestablished by intraperitoneal injection of0.1%carbon tetrachloride(CCl4) olive oil10ml/kg, by intraperitoneal injection of10%D-galactosamine(D-GalN)800mg/kg, bycaudal vein injection of Bacillus Calmette Guerin(BCG) plus lipopolysaccharides(LPS)and CCl4-induced Chronic liver Injury in rats. The liver and spleen index; alanineaminotransferase(ALT), aspartate amiontransferase(AST), total protein(TP), albumin(ALB)activities in serum; superoxide dismutase(SOD) and glutathione peroxidase(GSH-PX)activities, malondialdehyde(MDA) and nitric oxide(NO) contents in liver homogenate;and the histopathological changes of the liver were assayed. Results: Ethyl acetaten-buohand Water extracts each dose group obviously decreased the activities of serum ALT inmice (P<0.01); Ethyl acetate and n-buoh extracts high dose group obviously decreased theactivities of serum AST in mice (P<0.01); Ethyl acetaten-buoh and Water extracts highdose group increased the activity of hepatic homogenate SOD, GSH-PX (P<0.05). Ethylacetate and Water extracts Each dose group obviously decreased the content of MDA (P<0.01); Compared with normal group, model group TP, ALB, A/G value althoughdecrease, but was not statistically significant. Roots of Foeniculum vulgare Mill. extractsimproved liver histopathology injuries. Conclusion: The extracts of Roots of Foeniculumvulgare Mill. have obvious protective effects on Acute and Chronic Liver Injury in mice.Among them the Ethyl acetate and Water extracts has most obvious effect. Especiallyethyl acetate extract effect is most obvious.
