Objective To study the relationship between serum iron, serum ferritin and vasovagal syncope in the children, and to explore the pathogenesis of children with VVS about serum iron and serum ferritin. Methods Twenty-one children who had been confirmed diagnosis VVS by head-up tilt test (HUTT), including12males and9females, and the age was8-14years, and the mean age were11.71±2.31years, were enrolled in this study as the syncope group, who came from the children syncope outpatient department of the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University during May2011to March2012. Eighteen children were selected including9males and9females, and the age was7~14years, and the mean age were10.78±2.18years with gender and age-matched as control group. The blood of cubital vein was extracted from the children of the syncope group and control group after fasting for12hours, respectively, and serum iron, serum ferritin, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume were detected. The results and the data were compared according to different classification criteria. SPSS16.0software was used for the statistical analysis of these data.Results①General information:There were no significant difference about gender and different age groups in the syncope group and control group (P>0.05).②The SI, SF and Hct of the syncope group were lower than the control group, respectively (15.15±4.55vs18.24±4.15μmol/L, P<0.05;59.10±26.81vs79.83±33.58μg/L, P<0.05;40.19±3.44vs38.01±2.68%, P<0.05), the MCV and Hb of the syncope group was lower than the control group, respectively (84.85±5.80vs86.18±3.42fl, P>0.05;127.57±10.62vs132.29±12.57g/L, P>0.05).③Male with SI, SF, Hct, MCV, Hb were slightly higher than female in children with VVS, respectively (15.34±3.26vs15.02±5.47μmol/L, P>0.05;62.37±25.50vs54.76±29.42μg/L, P>0.05;40.98±3.91vs39.14±2.5%, P>0.05;85.47±4.60vs84.01±7.32fl, P>0.05;134.67±13.49vs129.11±11.17g/L, P>0.05).④SI, SF in repeated syncope group were slight higher than the occasional syncope group, respectively (15.19±4.37vs14.58±4.87μmol/L, P>0.05;61.12±29.62vs57.27±25.30μg/L, P>0.05), compared with the occasional syncope group, Hb、Hct、MCV in repeated syncope group were slight lower, respectively (130.90±14.0vs133.55±11.65g/L, P>0.05,40.12±3.73vs40.20±3.32%, P>0.05;83.81±2.72vs85.99±7.98fl, P>0.05).Conclusion①SI、SF in children with VVS are lower than the control group.②There are no difference between male and female about SI、SF in children with VVS.③There are no predictive value for SI and SF to estimate the syncope frequency of VVS.
