Objectives To investigate the relationship of trace elements and Leptin levels with Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection in children.Provide a reference for the clinical treatment and further identify its clinical significance.Methods101patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms(in-cluded upper abdominal pain or periumbilial pain, sickness, loss of appetite and so on)were recruited in our study from May2011to October2011at the department of pediatrics in The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, ranging from1to14years old.In these patients, there were54boys and47girls.Serum immunoglobulin G antibodies against Hp were assessed by ELISA method.56chidren were Hp positive patients and45were Hp negative patients. In these Hp positive patients, there were29boys and27girls.In these Hp negative patients, there were25boys and20girls.Atomic absorption spectrometer was used to determine the contents of trace elements (copper, zinc, calcium, magnesium, iron) in whole blood among the two groups of children. The serum leptin levels of the two groups children’s were determined by ELISA method. To investigate the relationship of the trace elements and serum leptin between the two groups of children by SPSS17.0statistics software.Results1.Hp infection was associated with age.2.There was no significant difference in gender between patients with Hp positivity and with Hp negativity.3.There was no significant difference in the contents of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and copper (Cu) in whole blood between patients with Hp positivity and with Hp negativity, but the contents of zinc (Zn),iron (Fe) of Hp positivity patients were respectively lower than those of Hp negativity patients and with statistically significant difference.4.The serum leptin level of Hp positivity patients were lower than those of Hp negativity patients, but no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups.5.The leptin level of boys was lower than that of girls but with no statistical significance. There was no significant difference in leptin level between boys and girls with Hp positivity and with Hp negativity. Conclusions (1)To children,Hp infection rate becomes higher with age,but it has nothing to do with the gender.(2)The infection of Hp is an important factor for inducing or aggravating Fe or Zn deficiency in children. The children with Hp infection should be detected the level of Fe and Zn.To redress the deficiency of Zn and Fe shoud be done in time.It is helpful to prevent the iron deficiency in children if they are treated by adding zinc and iron in necessary time.(3)Leptin levels were not associated with Hp infection and gender.
