Abstract:Aim The qualitative assessment of general movements(GMs) comparedwith the traditional neurological examination method for high-risk infants in thepredictable value of neurodevelopmental outcome. Methods The study involved197high-risk infants except for congenital defects andhereditary diseases who were born in our hospital from January2010to Decenber2010.All of the high-risk infants were checked by the qualitative assessment of GMs and52Items Neurological Assessment from Birth to1year at different periods after birth.Theywere assessed at1year by movement scale of Bayley ScaIes of InfantDevelopment(BSID), in order to assess whether the high-risk infants haveneurobehavioral abnormalities.Result Predictive validity was as follows:In preterm and writhing movements period:146patients are normal, and the other51patients are abnormal,sensitivity88.89%,specificity84.12%, positive predictive value47.06%,and negative predictive value97.95%;in fidgety movements period:169patients are normal, and the other28patientsare abnormal, sensitivity81.48%, specificity96.47%, positive predictive value78.57%,and negative predictive value97.04%;52Items Neurological Assessment fromBirth to1year:94patients are normal, and the other103patients are abnormal, predictive validity was as follows: sensitivity92.59%,specificity54.12%, positivepredictive value24.27%, and negative predictive value97.87%.Kappa value of them respectively were0.531、0.768and0.214.Conclusion The method of qualitative assessment of GMs had better sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and agrees than classical neurological examinationin predicting the neurological development of high-risk infants, so the assessment toolcan be extensively used in China.
