Objective To observe the effect of lateral recess injection with Ozone(O3)or glucocorticoid (GC) for the treatment of spinal radiculitis caused by protrusion of lumbar intervertebral disc, and the influence of postoperative plasma glucose. And to verify the feasibility of treatment of radiculitis using O3instead of GC.Methods96patients with spinal radiculitis by protrusion of lumbar intervertebral disc were inrolled. According to the patients with or without a history of diabetes mellitus, all cases were divided into non-diabetes mellitus groups(N-groups)and diabetes mellitus groups (D-groups),each group were further subdivided into two groups:N-O3group, N-GC group, D-O3group, D-GC group. The patients in N-O3group and D-O3group were injected via lateral recess with O3, and those in N-GC group and D-GC group with GC. Pain, SF-36, symptoms, the excellent and good rate, side effects and plasma glucose were compared among the different groups.Results1.Pain:Compared with T1in all4groups, VAS,NRS,ODI were significantly decreased at different time points after treatment (P<0.01) while JOA were significantly increased(P<0.05). The ODI and JOA of group D-GC were significantly improved compared to that of group D-O3.2.SF-36:PF、BP、RE、MH of SF-36in all4groups and GH in group N-GC, VT in group N-O3were significantly increased(P<0.05)at T7after treatment.3. Symptoms:The patients in all4groups perfprmed with Lasegue sign could achieve greater angle at T2,5-7point. There were no significant changes in patients’ myodynamia in all4groups. 4. Plasma glucose:Compared with pretherapy, postoperative plasma glucose raised immediately after treatment and then dropped down gradually in N-GC group, D-O3group and D-GC group(P<0.01). In N-GC group, postoperative plasma glucose were significantly higher than that in N-O3group (P<0.05). Postoperative plasma glucose were significantly higher in D-GC as compared with D-O3(P<0.05).5. The excellent and good rate and side effects:The excellent and good rate among all groups reached over75%, whereas no severe side effects were found throughout this study..Conclusions Compared with GC, lateral recess injection with O3achieved similar effectiveness for the treatment of spinal radiculitis by protrusion of lumbar intervertebral disc and render less influence on plasma glucose. We concluded that lateral recess injection with O3can be used as an alternative treatment of radiculitis.
