Objective: Learn the status quo of core competency of nurses in six three level offirst-class Hospitals in Changchun. Understand and compare the level and characteristics ofcore competency of registered nurses in terms of different working time, job title,educational background,current working department, and formulate feasible training plan。Methods: We selected a total of360nurses from six three level of first-class Hospitals inChangchun by convenience sampling methods, The Competency Inventery for RegesteredNurse scale (CIRN, by Liu Ming)was distributed to investigate areas of criticalthinking/research aptitude,clinical care,leadership, interpersonal relation, legal/ethicalpractice,professional development,teaching/coaching. The questionnaires were collectedwith100%in return,of which354were valid ones. And the data was analyzed using thestatistical package of social science (SPSS13.0). P values less than0.05is consideredsignificant.Results: The core competency level of nurses was reported. The overall score is153.36±10.80,critical thinking and research aptitude score is26.76±2.790, clinical care score is24.17±3.986,leadership score is27.29±3.758,interpersonal relationship score is22.73±3.279,legal/ethical practice score is22.58±2.881,Professional development score is14.36±2.605,teaching/coaching score is15.47±5.611.Conclusions:1The overall core competency is at the upper middle level for nursesfrom six three level of first-class Hospitals in Changchun. They are competent to providehealth care. But it is need to strengthen the training to improve the Core Competency ofNurses more, especially, it is need to strengthen the training to improve the competency ofcritical thinking/research aptitude, professional development,teaching/coaching.2Increase with age, the competency level of critical thinking/research aptitude,leadership, interpersonal relation, professional development,teaching/coaching increase,The core competency level of nurses with higher ten years of working experience is higher, While the core competency level of nurses working for l~5years and6~10years is lower,P<0.05.Comparing core competency levels of nurses for working11~15years,16~20years,more than20years,there were no significant difference among three groups,P>0.05.3As the job title increased, the competency level of critical thinking/research aptitude,leadership, interpersonal relation, professional development,teaching/coaching increase,The core competency of Nurse-in-charge or above is the highest group,P<0.05. The lowest isthe junior nurse’s group.4With the improvement of education degree, the competency level of criticalthinking/research aptitude, leadership, interpersonal relation, professional development,teaching/coaching increase. The competency score of the nurses graduated from technicalsecondary school is the lowest, For nurses With bachelor degree or above,the overallcompetency score is the highest, P<0.05.5Comparing the competency scores for nurses in different departments of hospital,there is no statistical significance (P>0.05)in critical thinking/research aptitude,interpersonalrelation,legal/ethical practice. there is statistical significance (P﹤0.05)in clinical care,leadership, professional development,teaching/coaching. The competency scores for nursesin ICU is higher than the nurses in internal medicine ward, surgery ward, obstetric andgynecology ward, pediatric ward, P﹤0.05. The competency scores for nurses in emergencydepartment is higher than the nurses in internal medicine ward, surgery ward, obstetric andgynecology ward, pediatric ward, P﹤0.05.ICU and emergency department nurses get thehighest core competency score.6Nurses with different working time, different job title, different educationalbackground and different current working department, that the Core Competency have somedifference, so by the current status on Core Competency of Nurses,we can take nurseslayered training and use, According to the nurse capacity building advanced system.
