Objective: To investigate the clinical value of serum procalcitonin, C-reactiveprotein and white blood cell count in diagnosis and prognosis with severe communityacquired pneumonia in elderly patients. In order to improve the clinical diagnosis andproper treatment plan to provide a reference. Methods: Use case-control study, analysisof56patients who admitted to our hospital with severe community acquired pneumonia inelderly patients from September2010to September2011, and47cases of upperrespiratory tract infectionin elderly patients, respectively, as the experiment and controlgroups. As well as determination of serum PCT concentration of CRP and WBC, and todevelop a positive threshold; based on the outcome of patients with severe pneumonia, isdivided into the group of death and improved group. To determine the1,4,7days ofadmission in patients with serum PCT, the concentration of CRP and WBC. Count datausing the χ2test, measurement data was analyzed by t-test, inspection level=0.05, P<0.05was statistically significant, the results were compared. Results: The serum PCT,CRP and the WBC level with the control group compared to a significant increase, asignificant difference between the two groups(P<0.05); the serum CRP diagnosticsensitivity of93.1%, respectively higher than the PCT of87.9%, the WBC of84.5%; inthe specific comparison the PCT was95.7%, significantly higher than that of CRP (83.0%)and WBC(78.7%). The death group on days1,4,7serum PCT, CRP and WBC levelcompared with improved group, their concentrations were significantly increased. Conclusion: Serum the PCT, CRP, WBC detection in the diagnosis of severe communityacquired pneumonia in elderly patients have some clinical value; the sensitivity of CRP ishigher than the PCT, WBC, but the specificity of PCT was significantly higher than that ofCRP, WBC; The concentration of serum PCT, CRP and WBC level were importantreference in the prognostic evaluation.
