ObjectiveTo investigate nurses’ self image status in HengYang city Hunan province. Toexplore the influencing factors of nurses’ self-image and analyze the interactionamong these variables so as to provide reference basis of drawing up andimplementing appropriate human resource management policies for care managers.MethodsA total of587nurses in three hospitals of HengYang city were recruited byconvenience sampling method, and asked to complete the questionnaires such asGeneralized Information Questionnaire, Self Image of Nursing Scale, ProfessionalSelf-Concept of Nurses,Turn-over Intention Scale. The data of questionnaires wereanalyzed by SPSS13.0.Results1. The mean score of ‘general perception toward nurses’ image.’ was3.414±1.307,the mean score of perception self image was3.537±0.409, the mean score ofexpectation self image was3.451±0.479, being in an above medium level. Thedifference between perception and expectation self image was0.086±0.540. Thescores of perception self-images from high to low were: Angel of mercy aspect3.956±0.559, Careerist aspect3.736±0.705, Bureaucratic aspect3.551±0.996, Obedientaspect3.148±0.940, Romantic aspect2.788±0.843. The scores of expectationself-images from high to low were: Careerist aspect3.819±0.701, Angel of mercyaspect3.689±0.669, Bureaucratic aspect3.645±0.862, Romantic aspect2.897±1.159, Obedient aspect2.895±1.062. The difference between perception andexpectation self images form high to low were: Angel of mercy aspect0.255±0.867,Obedient aspect0.256±1.283, Romantic aspect-0.085±1.324, Careerist aspect0.072±1.174, Bureaucratic aspect-0.052±0.878. 2.The scores of ‘general perception toward nurses’ image’ in different age, maritalstatus, contract of labor, years of work, professional qualification, have or notclose relatives in nursing experience were no statistic differences. On the anther hand,the scores of ‘general perception toward nurses’ image’ in different education level,monthly income, family background, nursing as the first job choice were significantstatistics differences.3.Each dimensions of professional self-concept of nurses were positively correlatedwith expectation self image of nurses. The dimensions of intention to quit the jobwere negatively correlated with expectation self image of nurses and professionalself-concept of nurses.4. Nurses’ monthly income, education level, family background, nursing as the firstjob choice explained56.6%of the variance of general perception toward nurses’image. The perception of Angle of mercy and Careerist aspects, the expectation ofAngle of mercy and Careerist aspects, the difference of Careerist aspect explained20.8%of the variance of general perception toward nurses’ image. The monthlyincome, education level, family background, nursing as the first job choice, theperception of Angle of mercy and Careerist aspects, the expectation of Angle ofmercy and Careerist aspects, the difference of Careerist aspect explained65.7%of thevariance of general perception toward nurses’ image.Conclusion1.The score of perception self image of nurses was higher than the score ofexpectation self image of nurses, the perception of Angel of mercy aspect was viewedas being both the most agreeable and different aspect. The Careerist aspect was themost expected aspect.2.The influencing factors of general perception toward nurses’ image’ were monthlyincome, education level, family background, nursing as the first job choice,professional qualification, the perception of angle of mercy and careerist aspects, theexpectation of Angle of mercy and Careerist aspects, the difference of Careerist aspect, leadership, skill, communication, possibility of quit current job. Nurses’ monthlyincome was the strongest influencing factor followed by the difference of careeristaspect.3. Nurse should make self-motivation to establish strong professional self concept ofnursing to avoid the conflict between the ideal aspect and the actual aspect, pay closeattention to stereotype image of nursing, make great effort to improve nurse image.Health care agencies and nurse managers should focus on the destroyed power ofstereotype image of nursing, foster a new nurse model to inspiring other nurses.
