Four-Lake area of Hubei Province, with its geographic area of12.8thousand square kilometers and6.79million Mu arable areas, contains Chang Lake, San Lake, Bailu Lake and Hong Lake, located in the hinterland of Jianghan Plain, and under the jurisdiction of Jingzhou governmentThis area has a better development of husbandry, famous for its role as manufacturing base of commodity grain, oil, fish and lean pigs.Schistosomiasis, found in both humans and animals, is a major parasitic disease in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, esp. the Four-Lake area of Hubei Province. As a heavily epidemic and priority control area, it has the features such as:wide in prevalent areas, populous in epidemic areas, large in oncomelania-distributed areas, in both humans and animals, difficult to control and prevent, etc. Over time, in terms of epidemic factors, epidemic features and the new situations in control of schistosomes in Hubei provinces, the Party Central Committee and the State Council probe into and confirm new countermeasures. By implementing them and technical schemes, the concerned in epidemic areas cooperates with the masses, fighting with the battle of destroying the oncomelania and curing this disease, which resulted a new turning point of provincial schistosomiasis control. The infected area has undergone a fundamental change with its rural society, life, and the ecological environment have been significantly improved and initially reverses the passive situation of the epidemic rebound.This dissertation, based on the40-years experience of controlling schistosomiasis in Four-lake area of Hubei province as the background, summarizes the history and epidemic situation of schistosomiasis endemic areas, briefly analyzes regional characteristics such as:prominent local features, frequent floods and the evolution of oncomelania. and introduces the feature and environmental features in epidemic areas. It also generalizes the current prevalent features and epidemic situation in Four-lake of Mid-Yangtze River areas in Hubei province, discusses the realistic situations and technical composition of the comprehensive new controlling strategies in view of main source of schistosomiasis infection, presents the pilot projects and its application effects. At last, aiming at the current schistosomiasis control work of the Four-Lake area, it proposes and elaborates new preventions and treatments, such as:synchronized detection and treatment for both human and livestock, the expansion of chemotherapy, the use of machines instead of cattle, It combines the theory and practice and pays attention to several issues during the process of carrying out these new strategies so as to be beneficial to accelerate the process of lake schistosomiasis control and promote the long-term planning objectives of China’s prevention and control of schistosomiasis.
