Objective To investigate the expression of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF) in the serum of osteosarcoma patients, and to explore its clinical significance. Methods Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was applied to test MIF of30healthy controls and32osteosarcoma patients in the first admission, before and after chemotheropy, and analyzed the relationship between MIF expression and clinicopathologic features of osteosarcoma, expression of MIF affected by chemotherapy were analyzed. Results The MIF of osteosarcoma patients in blood in the first admission is expressed highly than the control group. The expression has significant correlation with osteosarcoma Enneking clinical stages, tumor size and metastasis. And the lever of MIF in blood of patients receiving new adjuvant chemotherapy was significant differences before and after the chemotherapy. Conclusion MIF could serve as a prognostic marker and a potential therapeutic target for osteosarcoma. objective To investigate the expression of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF) in osteosarcoma, and explore it’s role in tumor invasion and metastasis. Methods Immunohistochemisty was applied to test MIF in osteosarcoma tissues of61cases and corresponding adjacent tissues(>5.0cm at the outer edge of the tumor tissue) of15cases. Results The positive rates of MIF in osteosarcoma tissues were62%, and in adjacent tissues were33%. The difference was statistically significant. The expression of MIF was significantly correlated with lung metastasis, but not related with sex, age, location, clinical stage and pathological type. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicated that the survival rate was markedly lower in patients with high expression level of MIF than those with low expression lever. Conclusion MIF may play an important role in metastasis in osteosarcoma, so might be employed to evaluate the prognosis of osteosarcoma patients.
