Objective:To study the value of uterine artery embolisation (UAE) in second and third trimester termination of pregnancy with complete placenta previa. Methods:From Jan.2002to July2011, we studied all patients with complete placenta previa at20-32weeks’gestation using labor induction for termination of pregnancy (TOP)(19cases) and divided them into two groups. The one group is that using UAE for labor induction in six people, the other group is that labor induction without UAE. We compared the number of people undergoing Caesarean section(CS), hysterectomy and transfusion between the two groups and also compared the blood loss during labor induction and total induced time between them. Results:Of the6patients who underwent labor induction with UAE, no one has CS. In the other group, there are2women who needed CS because of severe haemorrhage. Blood transfusion was needed in only2cases in the group of labor induction with UAE; whereas in the other group8patients needed transfusion. In the two groups, no one need hysterectomy because of severe haemorrhage. And there is no different on total induced time between them. In the group of labor induction without UAE, the average blood loss was910.7ml, which was4times than in the group of TOP with UAE. It was statistically significant between them-The group with UAE and the group without were similar regarding maternal age, gravidity, parity,,gestational age, the frequency of prior caesarean section. Conclusion:UAE for labor induction can greatly decrease haemorrhage and uterine damage in the cases with complete placenta previa in the second and third trimester.
