Objective. To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of prophylactic balloon occlusion of the abdominal aorta in women with complete placenta previa.Methods.Retrospective case-control study of women diagnosed with complete placenta previa at the People’s Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from march 2013 to march 2016. Cases were divided into two groups.Fifty-eight cases was underwent prophylactic temporary balloon occlusion(BC),followed by cesarean section.Eighty-eight cases was underwent cesarean alone.Statistical analysis were considered:estimated blood loss, transfused blood products units, operative time, incidence of postpartum heamorrhage, cesarean hysterectomy rate, Apgar score at 1 and 5 min and hospital length of stay. Surgical complications, balloon catheter-related complications, and fluoroscopy times were also reported.Results.Mean estimated blood loss and transfused blood products units were lower in the BC group compared with group cesarean alone(878.45ml vs 1680.68 m\,P=0.002; 1.36 units vs 3.39units,P=0.028).Mean operative time were also shorter in the BC group than the group cesarean alone(81.02 minutes vs 101.56minutes,P=0.029).And the incidence of postpartum heamorrhage were lower for the group that had BC compared with the group that did not too(25.9% vs 46.6%,P=0.012).No difference in cesarean hysterectomy rate, Apgar score at 1 and 5 min and hospital length of stay were found between the BC plus cesarean and the cesarean alone groups. There were no major catheterization-related complications.Conclusion.During scheduled caesarean section for complete placenta previa,Prophylactic balloon occlusion of the abdominal aorta is a effectiveness and safety treatment.Prophylactic balloon occlusion of the abdominal aorta can reduce intraoperative blood loss, shorter operative time and reduce the risk of postpartum heamorrhage.
