Objective To compare the effects of BMI control and taking metformin in obese type women with polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS).Methods A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was carried out in Heping Hospital. Eighty ob-ese type women with PCOS were divided into two intervention groups:weight control group and weight controll plus taking metformin group. Patients were treated with weight control (diet and exercise) and weight control plus taking metformin (diet,exercise and metformin500mg three ti-mes a day) for three months. Fifty-two patients completed treatments. BMI,LH,T and ovulation were measured and compared in all patients before and after treatment.Results No significant differences were found in baseline characteristic between two groups.In weight control group72.5%(29/40) patients completed treatment, and24.13%(7/29) patients resumed ovulation. In weight control plus taking metformin group57.5%(23/40) patients comp-leted treatment. At the same time,43.48%(10/23) patients resumed ovulation. There were no si-gnificant differences between two groups in BMI and ovulation rate after treatment.There were significant differences between two groups in T and LH level after treatment.Conclusion weight control and metformin can improve ovulation each.
