Objective: In order to investigate the changes and significance of hypoxic inducible factor (HIF)-1α,vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and placenta growth factor(PIGF)in hypoxiaadaptation of Tibetan and Han in high altitude. Methods: Chose healthy adult of Han in plain (Yancheng, Jiangsu province,altitude5m), nativeTibetan and Han in moderate (Xining,Qinghai province,2261m)and high altitude (Maduo,Qinghaiprovince,4380m).The serum concentration of HIF-1α,VEGF and PIGF was measured with enzymelinked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).Analyzed the correlation of PIGF with HIF-1α and VEGF andthe correlation between them with arterial partial pressure of oxygen(PaO2).Result: The level of HIF-1α did not increase in moderate altitude. It increased in Tibetan and Han inhigh altitude(P<0.01),but there was no significant difference between Tibetan and Han(P>0.05).Thelevel of VEGF did not increase until in high altitude. The level of VEGF in Han in high altitude washighest in all groups(P<0.05).The level of VEGF in Tibetan in high altitude was higher than Han inplain and Tibetan in moderate altitude(P<0.05).The level of PIGF in Tibetan and Han in moderatealtitude was lower than Han in plain(P<0.05).The level of PIGF in Tibetan and Han in high altitude washigher than moderate altitude, and PIGF in Han was higher than Tibetan in high altitude(P<0.05). Thelevel of HIF-1α, VEGF and PIGF negative correlated with PaO2(r=-0.475,-0.686,-0.511, all P <0.01).VEGF and PIGF positive correlated with PaO2in Tibetan groups (r=-0.376,-0.482, all P>0.05).Therewas positive correlation between PIGF and HIF-1α, VEGF(r=0.459,0.437,all P <0.01) in Han.Conclusion:1. HIF-1α didn’t increase until oxygen to a certain degree. In the sameheight levels,HIF-1α was identical in Tibetan and Han.2.VEGF will increase when oxygen to acertain degree. There was significant difference between Tibetan and Han. That means VEGF issensitive to hypoxia in Han than Tibetan.3. PIGF was depressed in moderate altitude, it will increaseonly when hypoxia to certain degree, Han was higher than Tibetan. PIGF of Tibetan had same level inhigh altitude with Han in plain.4.Tibetan and Han had same level of HIF-1α in the same hypoxialevel, but VEGF and PIGF had different level. There are other adjust factors play the role to regulatethe VEGF and PIGF.
