At present, there isn’t an ideal means for the diagnosis and treatment of intestinebleeding. Especially, the middle part of small intestine, which is far away from the oralcavity and anus, becomes a difficult target area in the clinical diagnosis and treatment. For the diagnosis of intestine bleeding diseases, in most cases the discriminationdepends on the clinical experiences. Laparotomy surgery and hemostasis surgery(high-frequency electrocoagulation, laser therapy, cryotherapy, etc) with endoscopy aretwo major treatments of intestine bleeding diseases, but both of them are very invasive.Under this background, a smart capsule that could automatically recognize thesymptoms of bleeding and delivery drugs is proposed here, which aims to provide a newmethod for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of the intestine bleeding diseases. Themain research contents of this paper are summarized as follows:1In view of the color difference between the areas with or without hemorrhage, anautomatic bleeding detection method was proposed here. Through the analysis of colorspace, the color characteristic parameters hue (H) and saturation (S) were determinedfor the recognition of intestinal bleeding. With comprehensive consideration of thephysiological structure and liquid environment of the digestive tract, a bleedingdetection module applied to the intestinal tract was designed. The in vitro experimentsverified the effect of the color sensor for bleeding recognition and determined thediscrimination conditions of color characteristic parameters H and S (3≤H≤25,0.3≤S≤0.8).2In the drug release module, a micro-thrust applied to the gastrointestinal tractwas designed. As a key part in the micro-thrust, an ignition was completed and theperformance of the ignition was tested in vitro experiments. Test results demonstratedthat when the trigger signal was received by the micro-thrust, the ignition couldaccomplish the lighting of propellant successfully.3The overall designed of the smart capsule for drug release and automaticbleeding recognition was completed. The working principle was that the smart capsuleexecuted the bleeding characteristic identification every5~10seconds time interval.Once the bleeding nidus was recognized, a drug release signal was sent immediately, analarm signal was sent to the outside simultaneously. This paper introduced the overallstructure of the capsule, the hardware circuits of the function modules and the software design of the system.4The power consumption of the micro-system was analyzed and tested in theexperimental part. Test results demonstrated that the power consumption of the capsulemeets the need of lower power designs. Because of the discontinuous conduction mode, the average power consumption of the capsule was about2.1mW under3.0V supplyvoltage. As a novel method for intelligent diagnosis and treatment of intestinal bleedingdisease, the smart capsule could solve the problems that the existing bleeding detectionmeans are facing, which have great dependence on physicians. Meanwhile, it could alsoavoid the great pain to patients during the existing invasive haemostatic treatmentprocess. With the follow-up study, the capsule we proposed in this article is expected tobecome a practical and innovative medical product. At present, there is no relevantresearch has been reported at home and aboard, therefore, the research on the smartcapsule for diagnosis and treatment of intestinal bleeding has good academicsignificance and clinical application value.
