Objective:To investigate the performance of DCE-MRI and DWI in nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC)for further understanding.Methods:1. Basic materials:30patients with NPC had been enrolled from December2010to March2012. All cases were definitely diagnosed by pathology and had not any treatment beforetaking MRI. All cases had taken plain MRI, SE–EPI–DWI, DCE-MRI and contrast-enhancedT1WI.2. Image analysis and data processing: The data collected from DCE-MRI and DWI wasprocessed by Functool software of GE ADW4.2workstation. Regions of interest (ROIs)were drawn to get the T-SI curves, and the ADC value and the data of three characteristicparameters with DCE-MRI were recorded for statistical analysis, including positiveenhancement integral (PEI), time to peak (TP) and maximum slope of increase (MSI). Bymanual calculation, the relative value of PEI, TP, and MSI were got for statistical analysis.3. Statistical analysis:Statistical software of SPSS19.0version was adopted. Statistics wasrecorded in the form of mean±standard deviation (Mean±SD).The enumeration data wasmeasured by chi-square test, and the measurement data was calculated by analysis of ambi-independence sample t-test severally. And the difference was considered to be of statisticalsignificance when the P-value was lower than0.05.RESULTS:1. T-SI curves of untreated NPC manifest as up speed–the platform type in18cases, upspeed–down slow type in7cases and up slow–the platform type in5cases.2. There were significant difference between the PEI, TP and MSI value of NPC and that ofnormal muscle (P<0.05).3. The absolute value and relative value of PEI showed an increasing trend from type I to typeIII in NPC. There were significant differences between type II and type III, type I and type III in PET value (P<0.05). There was significant difference between type II and type III inrelative PET value (P<0.05).4. The relative value of TP showed a trend of decreasing from type I to type III in NPC.However, there were no statistically significant differences between them(P>0.05). Therewas significant difference between type II and type III in TP value (P<0.05).5. The absolute value and relative value of MSI showed an increasing trend from type I totype III in NPC. However, there were no statistically significant differences between them(P>0.05).6. The ADC value showed a trend of decreasing from type I to type III in NPC. However,there were no statistically significant differences between them(P>0.05).7. Compared whether lymph node metastasis or not, there were significant differencesbetween T-SI curves type A and type C in NPC (P<0.05).Conclusions:DCE-MRI and DWI show the difference in different types of NPC. MR functional imagingcan reflect the biological information of microcirculation and the motion of water moleculesin NPC.
