Burley production is an important material of blended type cigarette, the quality of aroma, flavor style and the safety of cigarette production are veryimportant for the cigarette production. On the basis of burly fromHuBei,SiChuan,ChongQing and YunNan as well as USA and Malawi burley sampleswere collected, the burly of the appearance quality, physical properties, chemicalcomponents, neutral aroma constituent, sensory quality and safety were analyzed andevaluated synthetically. Its main conclusions were as follows:1.The appearance quality of different producing areas were different and met therequirement. The structure of Hubei and Chongqing tobacco were not enough loose, the identity of Sichuan were slightly thin while Yunnan were thick, needed to beoptimized deeply.2.Physical characteristics of burly in different producing areas were relativelystable. Leaf weight, quality weight and thickness of SiChuan tobacco were too smallwhile leaf weight of HuBei tobacco slightly smaller. Each index of physicalcharacteristics in ChongQing and YunNan was at the suitable scope and fared better.3.Chemical components and ratio existed a wide range of difference in differentproducing areas at home and abroad. The total and reducing sugar contents were onthe low side in the domestic and international burly tobacco. Total nitrogen contentwas adequate in USA and domestic producing areas and low in Malawi samples.Theleaf of YunNan and Malawi had low content of nicotine.Potassium, chlorine and ratioof potassium to chlorine remained appropriate in domestic and overseas buely. Theratio between alkali and nitrogen was relatively appropriate in YunNan, USA andMalawi leaf while other habitats were low.The nornicotine content and nicotine conversion were highest in ChongQingtobacco, followed by HuBei.The nornicotine content was low in SiChuan, YunNan,USA and Malawi burley samples and was not significantly different. The problem ofnicotine conversion in HuBei and ChongQing was in serious trouble while there wereproblems in YunNan, making breeds improvement a top priority4.The content and proportion of aroma components in SiChuan had been closeto ChongQing and may be associated between the two places with ecologicalconditions similar to the other. The contents of carotenoid were higest in USA,especially megasitigmatrienones. The contents of benzyl alcohol and phenethylalcohol in domestic fall faster than USA and Malawi burley.ChongQing had thehighest contents of cembratriendid alkyl degrading products, significantly above otherproducing areas. ChongQing and SiChuan had the highest contents of browingreaction.5.There was still a gap between civil and foreign at sensory quality. Aromacharacters of HuBei burly were obvious but not sufficient and with the deficiency ofaroma and was short of harmony. The burly of SiChuan had the feature of distinctivestyle, large amount of aroma, shortcoming exquisite and plump and strength toolarge.ChongQing burley tobacco was the certain degree of aroma,of medium to full, peculiar smell, obvious nicotine flavour and nasal stimulation. The aroma quality andconcentration of aroma in YunNan were at the medium level, needing to be furtherimproved.6.The TSNA contents in tobaccos from Dazhou and Binchuan were at the lowlevels comparable to foreign samples. Contents of NNN and total TSNAs variedgreatly among samples from different areas, while the differences in NNK, NAT andNAB contents were relatively small. The conversion of nicotine leading to theincrease of nornicotine was the main cause for abnormal increase of NNN and totalTSNAs in tobaccos from certain areas, and with the increase of total TSNAs, theproportion of NNN increased proportionally. Nicotine conversion and nitrate contentswere two main factors contributing to the increase and accumulation of TSNAs. Thepurification and improvement of current cultivars for low nicotine conversion was anessential means to reduce TSNA formation.Lowering of nitrate accumulation tominimize the substrate of nitrate reduction was another important approach for TSNAreduction.
